Life in Spiti — A Winter in a Himalayan Desert

In 2014 there were almost no photographs of Spiti in winter. So I stayed for one — six months, down to −30°C — and made a portrait of the valley when the roads close.
From a makeshift studio in Kaza I photographed around 400 people in traditional dress. Between sittings I followed the valley’s days: fetching water from frozen streams, monastery rituals, weddings, ice climbing and the long dark evenings indoors.
